You are invited to enter this Christmas season with a kindred soul – he understands curveballs, unmanageable circumstances, and crises of faith.
Introducing . . .
Jesus’ earthly dad.
This is my first series ever and I’m calling it: Discover A Kindred Soul in the Christmas Story.
Joseph’s marriage plans are in place – a normal marriage to a normal girl . . . until she drops the bomb. There’s a baby on the way.
You’re expecting a what? I hear what you are saying, Mary, but are you sure?
Mary is sure. She is having a son and there’s no turning back. She’s at peace.
Joseph, far from peace, isn’t sure about anything as his world spins out of control in an orbit that makes no sense. The only thing he can control is his reaction.
The world always advises self-preservation: Step away. This isn’t your problem.
Joseph resolves to break it off with Mary, but that night upon his bed . . .
wrestling his thoughts,
second- guessing his decision;
Joseph lies awake,
his brain stuck in a loop.
How did I end up here? Nothing is going the way it I thought it would go – the way it should go. This baby is Mary’s journey, not mine. Have I made the right decision? What to do – oh, what to do? Help me, Lord!
And the Lord answers – in spades! He drops an angel into Joseph’s personal crisis with 4 promises and some sorely-needed guidance:
Mary will have a Son.
You will name Him Jesus.
He will save His people.
This will fulfill God’s message through His prophets.
And, take a deep breath, Joseph – don’t hesitate to take Mary as your wife.
The first promise is already rocking his world, but I imagine Joseph feels some amount of relief at the guidance portion of the message. He is back in Mary’s life and back in the game.
Maybe he feels instant peace, or maybe he feels more like an astronaut sweating out the countdown.
10, 9, 8, 7 . . .
It’s not too late. I could call it off.
6, 5, 4, 3 . . .
Am I sure about this? Really sure?
2, 1, BLAST OFF
Yikes! This trip is happening.
Joseph will hold Mary’s hand, walk her path, and venture with her into the unknown. It is no longer Mary’s journey – it is their journey.
Can you relate?
Are you walking an unanticipated path?
Have you experienced a BLAST OFF moment when things got real in a hurry?
Maybe your path is fraught with curveballs, unmanageable circumstances, and crises of faith – but find refreshment in knowing that Jesus’ earthly father walked a similar path.
Like Joseph, you are playing a starring role in God’s plan, and every step draws you closer to His Son.
The angel promised, “Mary will have a Son.” And she did.
The news changed Joseph’s life . . . and it changes yours, too.
See you next week for Part 2 of the series . . .
